On October 22, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks in the Foreign Ministry with his Canadian counterpart Lawrence Cannon, who is here in China for a working visit.
Yang extended welcome for Cannon to visit China on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Yang said President Hu Jintao's state visit to Canada this June was a great success. The leaders of the two countries reached important consensus on developing China-Canada strategic partnership, thus charting the direction for the development of bilateral ties and pushing bilateral ties into a new development stage. Both sides have earnestly implemented the outcome of President Hu's Canada visit and achieved positive progress. China attaches great importance to developing ties with Canada and urges both sides to seize the opportunity, further consolidate the sound growth momentum of bilateral ties and lay a more solid foundation for the long-term development of the ties. China is ready to continue keeping closer exchanges with Canada at high and other levels, build up political trust and promote pragmatic cooperation. Both sides should also enhance communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, properly handle sensitive issues in bilateral ties and jointly push forward long-term sound and stable development of bilateral ties.

Cannon said that the leaders of the two countries attach great importance to developing bilateral ties which have scored remarkable results in the last year. Both sides have continuously deepened exchanges and cooperation in all areas. Canada is ready to further enhance mutually beneficial cooperation with China in the spirit of being friendly, frank and forward-looking in a wide range of areas including economy, trade, energy resources, environment, tourism, health and humanities and make joint efforts to push bilateral ties for greater development. Cannon also reaffirmed his country's adherence to the one-China policy.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
Prior to the talks, the two visited the Photos and Documents Exhibition in Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Ties between China and Canada held by the Bureau of Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.
