On July 23, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met respectively with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon in Hanoi, Vietnam.

During his meeting with Clinton, Yang said China-U.S. relations have maintained fine development momentum in general in recent years. President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Obama met in Toronto not long ago, reaching new important consensus on developing bilateral ties. China-U.S. relations face significant opportunities of development in the next phase. China is ready to work together with the U.S. side to implement consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, maintain frequent exchanges of visits at high and other levels and actively advance pragmatic cooperation, said Yang. Yang expected China and the United States could enhance communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and advance bilateral ties in a positive, cooperative and comprehensive manner. For her part, Clinton spoke highly of the Toronto meeting between the two heads of state and recent developments in bilateral ties. She said the United States would like to join hands with China to plan for high-level exchanges and enhance strategic dialogue and mutual respect. Clinton said the United States and China should expand cooperation on a wide range of areas including economy, trade and investment and expand personnel exchanges to maintain positive development momentum of bilateral ties.

In response to the planned U.S.-South Korean military drills, Yang said China firmly opposes foreign warships and military aircraft entering the Yellow Sea and other coastal waters of China to engage in activities affecting China's security and interests. Yang urged relevant parties to exercise calm and to refrain from acts that might damage bilateral ties and escalate tension in the region.

At the meeting between Yang and Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon, the two sides hailed last month’s state visit to Canada by President Hu as a great success, saying the visit has pointed out the direction for bilateral ties in the next period. In the next phase, both sides should enhance exchanges at high and other levels, lift the level of pragmatic cooperation and comprehensively deepen cooperation in a wide range of areas including economy, trade, energy resources, environmental protection, science and technology and infrastructure based on the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries. Both sides vowed to promote coordination in multilateral affairs, strengthen cultural exchanges and advance bilateral strategic partnership.
