On the evening of May 12, 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at request held a telephone conversation with new UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

Wen, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, congratulated Cameron on becoming the UK's new Prime Minister. "In recent years, with the deepening of the China-Britain comprehensive strategic partnership, the relationship between the two countries, which is more than just bilateral, has increasingly embodied more strategic significance and global vision," Wen said, adding that currently China-UK relations are facing rare opportunities for development. He expected to establish a good working relationship with Cameron and jointly enhance political mutual trust, deepen pragmatic cooperation and boost the China-Britain comprehensive strategic partnership for more achievements based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

Cameron appreciated Wen's congratulations, saying China is Britain's important strategic partner and his country highly valued the relationship. He said the British government under his leadership would pursue an active policy towards China, maintain bilateral high-level exchanges, deepen and expand cooperation of all fields and strengthen communication and coordination with China on major international affairs, so as to promote the development of Britain-China relations.
