On May 25, 2010, President Hu Jintao’s special representative State Councilor Dai Bingguo said that China and the US must help each other to make the huge vessel of China-US relations sail through wind and waves.
At the joint press conference of the second round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (SED), Dai noted that the mechanism of China-US strategic dialogue is rare in the world. Both sides determine to continue to use, develop and improve the mechanism to serve the building of the positive, cooperative and all-round China-US relations.
He said that both sides reviewed the achievements of all previous dialogues during the second round of strategic dialogue and especially held frank, in-depth and extensive talks and communications on the issues of promoting China-US relations in the new era, respecting each other’s core interest and major concerns, strengthening coordination on major international and regional issues and jointly building the regional cooperation mechanism in Asia and the Pacific. Related government agencies of both countries conducted consultations and bilateral meetings on such issues as energy security, climate change and the UN peacekeeping operations, signed a number of cooperation documents and achieved fruitful results of cooperation.
“Although the two sides did not reach consensus on each of the major issues, the dialogue is beneficial to the further development of the positive, cooperative and all-round partnership in the 21st century, “said Dai.
He indicated that both China and the US have realized that the world has entered into the post-financial crisis era. The situation faced and the responsibility shouldered by both of us determine that we must enhance mutual trust through close communications, realize win-win outcome through expanding cooperation and tackle challenges through reinforcing coordination. Only by continuing to help each other, the two countries can make the huge vessel of China-US relations sail through wind and waves.
“The two sides believe China-US relations have great significance to the two countries and the world at large. To strengthen China-US strategic mutual trust is critical to the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations in the new era,” he said.
The Chinese side stressed that it is impossible for China and the US to hold identical views on all the issues. The key is to follow the principles and spirit enshrined in the three joint communiqués and the China-US Joint Statement, respect and take care of each other’s core interest and major concerns, properly handle differences and sensitive issues, especially the Taiwan, Tibet and other issues concerning China’s core interest and constantly improve the foundation of mutual trust. As long as the two sides adhere to the correct direction, we will be able to overcome disturbances and obstacles and push forward the development of China-US relations continuously.
The two sides reiterated that they will respect and take care of each other’s core interest and major concerns and properly handle differences and sensitive issues in the spirit of mutual respect and consultations on an equal footing in order to ensure the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations, said Dai.
