On September 9, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with African Union (AU) Commission Chairman Jean Ping in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen said the AU has played an important role in the current easing of Africa's political and security situation, with its integration process stepping into a new phase. He pledged to strengthen China's cooperation with the African Union (AU) in an all-round manner.

"China attaches great importance to the positions and concerns of African countries in dealing with major international affairs such as the financial crisis and climate change," Wen said. China will well implement the follow-up actions of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Wen said. He noted that China would take further measures to help African countries to overcome difficulties based on their practical needs, actively expand mutually beneficial cooperation in trade and investment, and promote the international aid to African countries with the purpose of seeking common development.

The AU also attached great importance to China's constructive role in international affairs, Jean Ping said. He thanked China for its positive contribution to the cause of peace and development in Africa. "As Africa is facing challenges like developing economy and dealing with global issues, it eagerly wants to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields,” he said. The AU would as always continue to offer China its firm support in the issues related to China's core and major interests, he said.
