On March 2, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks in the Foreign Ministry with Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.
During the meeting, Yang said the China-Sweden relationship is now at its best in history. The two countries had witnessed frequent high-level visits and increased pragmatic cooperation in all areas. Yang applauded Sweden’s long-term adherence to the one-China policy, saying that China was ready to work with Sweden to promote the bilateral relations to a new level. "We hope Sweden, an important EU member, will continue to play a positive role in promoting the healthy and stable development of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership," he said.
Bildt said the Swedish government attaches great importance to developing relations with China and will continue to abide by the one-China policy. Both sides have witnessed closer high-level exchanges and deepening cooperation in economy, trade, environmental protection, education and science and technology, which the Swedish side is pleased with. Sweden will hold the EU rotating presidency in the latter half of this year. Bildt said his country would take this as an opportunity to make positive contribution to the development of EU-China relations as well as Sweden-China relations.
Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
