On February 26, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with visiting president of the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
Yang made positive comments on the progress made in the work of the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly. Yang said China would support the UN to make greater contributions to the causes of international peace, common development and closer international cooperation. China supports the United Nation's efforts to better tackle global threats and challenges through continuous reforms, said Yang. The UN reform should accommodate the interests and concerns of all parties, especially those of developing countries, while seeking consensus on the basis of wide negotiation, he said.
Brockmann thanked for China’s support to the UN and his work, saying that he expected China to play a more important role in international affairs as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and as an important developing country. He said the 63rd UN General Assembly would continue to make efforts to improve in all fields, in a bid to maintain its reputation and enhance its status and function in handling international affairs.
