On the afternoon of November 1, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu extended welcome to Ban, who is in China for an official visit and to attend the closing ceremony of Shanghai World Expo. He also expressed admiration for the efforts Ban had made to promote world peace and development since he took office.

To fulfill its mission and play its role more effectively, maintain world peace and promote common development more vigorously under the current complicated international situation, the UN must uphold the purposes and principles of its Charter, actively practice multilateralism and advance democracy in international relations; must give top priority to the development issues and strengthen the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); must reinforce its responsibilities in the international affairs and promote unity, cooperation, mutual benefit and common development of the international community.

China always advocates, supports and practices multilateralism. We firmly pursue the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and maintain the authority and role of the UN. China will continue to support and collaborate with the UN and the Secretary-General and make unremitting efforts to promote the building of a harmonious world with lasting peace and common prosperity, noted Hu.

Ban, on behalf of the UN, warmly congratulated the success of the World Expo. He said that the international community is faced with global challenges. Being integrated into the world, China takes an active part in the UN affairs and has played a leading role in realizing the MDGs, protecting women and children, promoting sustainable growth and carrying out peace-keeping operations, which is highly recognized by UN members.

He said that the UN will play an increasingly important role in the international affairs as the world changes. Multilateralism is gaining strength. He hopes China to continue to actively participate in the international affairs and work with the UN more closely. China has made great contributions to coping with the global financial crisis. He expects China to play a bigger part in solving the development issues.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi was also present at the meeting.
