On October 4, 2010, Premier Wen Jiabao had talks with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan during the Eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit.

Wen reiterated that the Diaoyu Islands have always been China's territory.

Wen pointed out that maintaining and promoting China-Japan strategic relationship of mutual benefit conforms to the fundamental interest of the two countries and their people.

The two sides agreed to strengthen the non-governmental exchanges and intergovernmental communication between the two countries and have the high-level meeting in proper time.
