On September 22, 2010, local time, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended and addressed the UN High-Level Meeting on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Premier Wen gave a comprehensive presentation on China's achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and China's propositions in this regard, announced a series of new policy measures, and called on the international community to strengthen cooperation and strive for the fulfillment of MDGs on schedule.
Wen said at the United Nations Millennium Summit it was proposed making the right to development a reality for everyone and freeing all mankind from hunger and poverty. Ten years have passed, the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals in different fields and regions is uneven and it remains a long way and an arduous task to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Wen pointed out that China has made unremitting efforts for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and made tremendous achievements. China will further intensify efforts in poverty alleviation and the Millennium Development Goals will be achieved in China on schedule.
Wen said the Chinese government will further strengthen and improve foreign assistance work and make due contribution to the entire mankind for the early realization of the Millennium Development Goals. He made six initiatives:
First, to promote the improvement of people's livelihood in developing countries; second, to reduce or exempt the debts of the least developed countries; third, to deepen financial cooperation with developing countries; fourth, to expand economic and trade relations with developing countries; fifth, to strengthen agricultural cooperation with developing countries; sixth, to help developing countries develop human resources.
Wen also announced that to support Pakistan in their efforts to fight against flooding and rebuild their homeland, China will, based upon the already-provided RMB-320-million humanitarian assistance, provide Pakistan with additional free aid in USD 200 million.
Wen said that the next five years will be a crucial stage for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. The United Nations should take realizing the Millennium Development Goals on schedule as its primary subject; the international community should take helping Africa achieve development and get ride of poverty as its main target; developing countries should take eliminating poverty through development as their central task. Developed countries should earnestly fulfill their commitments and assume primary responsibilities for assisting developing countries. The United Nations should continue to play a central role in international development cooperation. The peaceful environment should be maintained.
Wen Jiabao finally called on the international community, in a more positive attitude and a more sincere spirit of cooperation, work hard to achieve the Millennium Development Goals on schedule and promote the development and progress of the entire mankind.
