On March 18, 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Great Hall of the People. Both sides agreed to issue a joint statement and set up and develop closer comprehensive cooperative partnership from a strategic perspective.

Wen said the two nations, as close friendly neighbors, have always supported each other in major issues concerning national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and their relations enjoyed a solid political foundation. This year marks the 35th anniversary of China-Bangladesh diplomatic ties. Wen said China would work with the country to deepen exchanges and cooperation in all areas and push bilateral relations to a higher level. First, Wen hoped that the two nations would enhance high-level exchanges and strengthen consultations at all levels and keep closer coordination in regional and sub-regional cooperation, in a bid to safeguard peace, stability and development of South Asia. Second, China and Bangladesh should also make efforts to expand bilateral trade. Wen said the Chinese government encouraged and supported its competent and reputable domestic companies investing in Bangladesh, and joining in the construction of transport, communications and energy infrastructure. Third, Wen proposed the two nations increase cooperation in agriculture, poverty reduction and disaster relief, saying that China would continue assisting Bangladesh economically and technologically within its ability. Fourth, Wen hoped the two nations would enhance cultural exchanges, support cooperation at local levels and build up mutual understanding and feelings between both peoples. Fifth, both sides should make joint efforts to safeguard the fundamental interests of developing countries in major issues related to the United Nations reform, climate change and the millennium development goals so as to establish a fair and reasonable new international political and economic order.

Hasina said she had grown up amid her father's voice of praise for China and hailed the profound feelings and friendship between both peoples. Bilateral relations have made continuous progress based on mutual respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity and equality since the establishment of diplomatic ties 35 years ago. Hasina said that China's enormous achievements are a great encouragement to other developing countries. She expressed appreciation for China's long-standing help to her country's economic and social development, which, she said, is a vivid expression of friendship between the two peoples. Under the new situation, Bangladesh would like to develop closer ties with China and work with China to promote cooperation in agriculture, tourism and infrastructure construction. Bangladesh is also ready to enhance coordination with China in major international and regional issues including climate change and the UN reform so as to push bilateral ties to a higher level, she said. Hasina reiterated her country's firm adherence to the one-China policy.

Following their talks, the two prime ministers witnessed the signing of bilateral documents on economic and technological cooperation and other areas.

Prior to the talks, Premier Wen held a welcome ceremony for Hasina at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of China National Democratic Construction Association Gu Shengzu, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister of Transport Li Shenglin, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Xianyi attended the welcome ceremony.
