On May 6th, H.E. Mr. Yang Zhongmin, President of the South China Normal University (SCNU) had a meeting with President of Timor-Leste H.E. Dr. José Ramos-Horta. The two sides exchanged views on higher education cooperation, scientific and technological development, and cultural exchange. Chinese Ambassador H.E. Ms. Wang Wenli accompanied Mr.Yang to participate in activities.
During the meeting, President Yang Zhongmin gave an overview of SCNU, noting that the university established the Center for Timor-Leste Studies in 2021, making it the only institution among Chinese universities to have a country and regional research center named directly after Timor-Leste, under the Ministry of Education of China. He emphasized the long-standing traditional friendship between China and Timor-Leste, and said that cooperation in education and science and technology forms an important part of the practical cooperation between the two countries. As the China-Timor-Leste comprehensive strategic partnership continues to get deeper, SCNU will seize the momentum of bilateral friendship to further explore new models of collaboration with the UNTL in academic research, talent cultivation, and cultural exchange. The goal is to jointly support Timor-Leste’s autonomous and sustainable development in education and science.
President Ramos-Horta warmly welcomed President Yang and his delegation, stating that education and science are key sectors for Timor-Leste’s national development. He considered the cooperation between SCNU and the UNTL as both a valuable opportunity and platform, and expressed hope that the two universities will continue to deepen exchanges, learn from each other, and work together to cultivate more high-quality talents to advance the country’s socioeconomic progress.
